WORD TO THE WISE #25: Pray vs. Prey

Good morning!

During a recent conversation with my twelve-year old son, we started talking about homophones. (You know, words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings.) We got to listing all the homophones that would come to mind...to vs. two or too, rose vs. rose, meet vs. meat, etc.

Eventually, we got to the word pray. The homophone for it is prey. Immediately, the noun form of the word came to mind - "an animal that is hunted and killed by another for food". Then, I remembered that prey is also a verb defined as "take advantage of; exploit or injure".  Another definition is "cause constant trouble and distress to". But, the word pray can be defined as "wish or hope strongly for a specific outcome or situation".

That got me thinking and I remembered that I'd read somewhere that although some people will pray for you, there are others who will prey on you

Today, make sure you're surrounding yourself with those who are quick to pray for others...not those who will prey on others. Otherwise, you never know when you might become their next prey.

God bless you! Make this day GLORIOUS!!
